Microsoft Explains Concept of Internet Service Bus (ISB)

The Internet Service Bus

"Summary: Web applications are an extremely common application model, and they will become increasingly dominant. Almost all applications in medium to large businesses offer a Web user interface. In this article, we will use the term enterprise to encompass medium to large enterprises, and the software vendor and integrator companies. Desktop and client/server applications are increasingly using the browser for the UI engine and making calls to data and services through Web protocols.

Software, application models and the Web itself are undergoing a revolutionary transformation. This transformation will have as large an effect on computing as the client/server model or the initial emergence of the Web itself. The Web will evolve from connecting users to applications provided by sites into a model in which:

· The application executes “in the Web.”

· End-users develop their own applications for accessing the Web, transforming it into an end-user developed workspace for access to Web services.

This paper focuses on a small number of elements of the transformation. Other papers will expand the vision.

Several technologies and trends provide the impetus for the revolutionary transformation described above. Some examples are: multi-core processors; virtualization; application scenarios that federate many devices, such as mobile phones and tablets; Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web services; Web 2.0; and Software as a Service (SaaS).

We will discuss the effect of some of these trends, but our primary focus is SOA, Web 2.0, and Software as a Service (SaaS). These concepts and their relationships are not well understood. The technologies often appear to conflict. The paper describes the elements of a high-level reference architecture that brings the concepts together into a consistent whole.

Many of the preceding technology trends have broad acceptance and awareness. This paper discusses a third trend that is more controversial: ubiquitous programming ability. A large percentage of high school and college graduates have basic programming skills when entering the workforce; many students have developed simple PHP or Visual Basic applications and built Web sites. The professionals’ primary job responsibilities may not include programming, but in many cases professionals will do simple programming if it makes them more productive. They may also develop simple applications because it is “cool.” We will use the terms end-user programming for this concept.

End-user programming is an extreme case of opportunistic development, which occurs in departments and Lines of Business (LOBs) in enterprises. LOBs and teams often build simple, “quick and dirty” SharePoint or PHP applications that solve an immediate business problem by extending packaged applications or enterprise-wide core applications.

Opportunistic development contrasts with systematic development. Systematic development is model-driven, replete with requirements gathering, use cases and stakeholder interviews, an application development life cycle that includes quality and assurance, and so forth. Systematic development is the predominant model of the enterprise development team (“the CIO team”). Many packaged application developers (independent software vendors or ISVs) and Systems Integrators (SIs) also produce systematic solutions.

There is a tension in enterprises between opportunistic development and systematic development. This tension will increase if end-user programming becomes common. End users will not be content to wait for the systematic development teams to develop or modify solutions. The reference architecture we describe provides an approach for reconciling the extremes of opportunistic and systematic development.

We use a scenario to illustrate the reference architecture. A core element that emerges and underpins the architecture is an Internet Service Bus (ISB). The reference architecture encompasses many elements, however, this paper provides detail only for the ISB. Other papers will describe other elements."

"There's a new paper by David Chappell that is worth checking out. Entitled "Dealing with Diversity: Understanding WCF Communication Options in the .NET Framework 3.5", it discusses WCF and its applicability to REST as well as WS-* style communications.

As you may know, there's been lots of discussion about whether SOAP-based or REST-style approaches to services interfaces are the right thing.

If you're not familiar with the debate, here's the plot summary: that REST-style interfaces can be useful in basic scenarios, but if services-based applications demand things like reliabilility, transactions, forwarding, or message-based security, then SOAP with the comlpementary WS-* family of standards is probably a better approach. (Regarding REST, a secondary point is that many people say REST when what they mean is HTTP QUERY, and the two are different things. See my note below on Amazon SQS.)"

Microsoft’s SOA & Business Process Conference is the event for our customers and partners to get detailed guidance for planning and delivering solutions for Service Oriented Architecture and Business Process Management. SOA & Business Process issues reach across the entire organization from developers service enabling existing investments to architects recommending IT standards to business analysts optimizing processes and business owners investing in their IT portfolios. A Performance Comparison of Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) with Existing Distributed Communication Technologies

When migrating distributed applications written with ASP.NET Web Services, WSE, .NET Enterprise Services and .NET Remoting to WCF, the performance is at least comparable to the other existing Microsoft distributed communication technologies. In most cases, the performance is significantly better for WCF over the other existing technologies. Another important characteristic of WCF is that the throughput performance is inherently scalable from a uni processor to quad processor.

To summarize the results, WCF is 25%—50% faster than ASP.NET Web Services, and approximately 25% faster than .NET Remoting. Comparison with .NET Enterprise Service is load dependant, as in one case WCF is nearly 100% faster but in another scenario it is nearly 25% slower. For WSE 2.0/3.0 implementations, migrating them to WCF will obviously provide the most significant performance gains of almost 4x.

Microsoft has delivered a set of new services based on its BizTalk Server technology to help developers build new SOA-oriented applications.

Microsoft BizTalk Services, announced on April 24, 2007 include BizTalk Identity Services, which provide authentication, access control and federated identity based on the WS-Trust specification. The new BizTalk Relay Services facilitate the traversal and bridging of physical networks, enabling high-fidelity interconnection between cooperating systems for cross-organizational messaging behind firewalls. The new Internet Service Bus provides a simple publish-and-subscribe message bus. And the new BizTalk Workflow Services enable the designing applications graphically by drawing flowcharts. John Shewchuk blogged:

"Today many businesses run on an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). An ESB provides applications with a uniform set of mechanisms for naming, discovery, message routing, publish and subscribe eventing, message transformations, workflows, and so on. Microsoft bolsters just-unveiled Services Platform - InfoWorld

Microsoft is adding on Wednesday connectivity testing and publish-and-subscribe capabilities to its BizTalk Services platform for integrating services within and outside a firewall.

Announced just last week as an early-release Community Technology Preview for developers, BizTalk Services features Internet-hosted services for running composite applications. An Internet service bus capability that links applications across networks is highlighted.

Microsoft, however, is not positioning BizTalk Services as an SOA platform by itself. BizTalk Services is part of a set of Microsoft technologies providing a platform for building service-oriented applications. This platform includes, in addition to BizTalk Server, the .Net Framework and Visual Studio application development platform.

BizTalk Services and BizTalk Server together serve as a platform for a full range of SOA and SaaS (software as a service) services, according to Microsoft.

Yesterday, Microsoft released the first Community Technology Preview (CTP) of a new range of BizTalk Services. By building on the idea of an Enterprise Service Bus and leveraging Microsoft's Internet-ready Web Service technology in .NET 3.0, this creates an Internet Service Bus (ISB) to combine hosted services "in the cloud" working seamlessly with anyone's existing in-house private Web Services and Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) implementations.

The initial CTP service offerings cover hosted versions of technologies that Microsoft has been incubating within Connected Systems Division and the Windows Live Labs for the past year:

BizTalk Identity Services - federated identity technologies to help developers manage application identity and access control requirements (Available now)

New initiatives to support this
vision are being announced today:

Building Connections Between People and Processes

AMR Research estimates that 85 percent of the employees in organizations that have deployed an ERP system are not licensed to use the data and information managed by these systems*. Microsoft Dynamics is changing this equation by unlocking data and information for everyone in an organization and helping people realize greater productivity by easily accessing it as part of their jobs. Offerings that will help people connect
to their critical processes are being announced today:

    -- Microsoft Dynamics Client for Microsoft Office and SharePoint Server, a
       new low-cost package that contains a collection of up to 12 self-
       service applications built in Microsoft Office and SharePoint, as well
       as an enterprise license for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
       and access rights to all the information and processes managed by a
       Microsoft Dynamics ERP system.

    -- RoleTailored, a new user-experience design approach that builds on the
       next-generation look and feel of Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft
       Office system. This new approach to the user experience makes business
       application navigation, collaboration and insight an integrated and
       easy part of the software, helping to increase the relevance of
       business applications for all employees in a company.

These two new offerings contribute toward Microsoft's strategy for Office Business Applications, a new category of applications in which Microsoft Office becomes the front end for a business process system and delivers data and process information in a format that is familiar to people. Microsoft Dynamics CRM is an example of this type of application in which all the reports, forms and processes for managing sales, marketing
and customer service are presented to the user within Microsoft Office Outlook(R).

Connecting Companies With Communities

Microsoft will help customers extend the capabilities of Microsoft Dynamics solutions beyond the four walls of their companies to build richer connections with their community of customers, suppliers and partners. The
following are among the new ways in which Microsoft will help companies
more effectively connect with their:

    -- Online finance community, a new online community being introduced today
       that enables finance professionals -- including corporate controllers,
       finance managers, finance staff and accountants -- to interact with one
       another. This online site will include blogs, rich forums, tagging,
       syndication and many of the important building blocks of an interactive
       community to share best practices on the Web. In the true sense of
       community, members will vote to select the final name for this
       environment from a short list of options. Customers will be able to
       access the community from within all Microsoft Dynamics ERP solutions
       or by visiting http://community.dynamics.com.

    -- Software plus Services, an approach in which on-premise Microsoft
       Dynamics solutions are complemented by hosted services provided by
       Microsoft and its partners to enable businesses to reach out more
       comprehensively to their suppliers and customers via the Web. Microsoft
       Dynamics Live CRM will be the first example of such an offering from
       Microsoft Dynamics.

Bringing It Together With Major New Releases

Making this connected business vision a reality through support of the initiatives announced today are major new product releases: Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0, Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 and Microsoft Dynamics SL 7.0.

    -- Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0, scheduled to be available in late
       March 2007, will include deep functionality enhancements across
       finance, procurement and sales areas. New capabilities include managing
       intercompany transactions, purchase cost distribution, inventory
       costing, service order handling and advanced item tracking.

    -- Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0, which will be released in June 2007,
       includes more than 100 new core application features, a new user
       interface similar to that of Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft
       Office system, enhancements to business intelligence, a new workflow
       engine, and integrated structured and unstructured search capabilities
       based on the Microsoft Dynamics Client for Microsoft Office.

    -- Microsoft Dynamics SL 7.0, which will be released in June 2007,
       upgrades its development and configuration tools to Microsoft Visual
       Studio(R) 2005, making it a native .NET application throughout and
       providing new options for connecting business processes, as well as new
       application features such as QuickSend for automated electronic
       communication with vendors and customers, a new user interface similar
       to that of the Microsoft Office system, and RoleTailored business

SOA Interoperability in a Connected World

Until we have a ubiqutous world of web services - a Global SOA, we will actually see islands of SOA.  It is my belief that SOA will evolve through three major phases - Enterprise SOA -> B2B SOA -> Global SOA.   Enterprise SOA is well entrenched in a majority of enterprises and now many more organizations are expanding their "sphere of influence" to include their extended enterprise and their most trusted trading partners.  While Web Services are well defined and in theory can operate across a network, SOAs are still somewhat proprietary in nature and security, identity and middleware messaging are different between SOA environments. So in the short term and until we get to this "Global SOA", it is likely we will be build islands of SOA that we need to interconnect. Therefore mediation and interoperability will start to become more important as our sights are set on building out our SOAs.

The SOA Network Architect www.soanetworkarchitect.com focuses primarily on building out network infrastructure to support SOA - "SOA in a Connected World", and WCF Architect www.wcfarchitect.net will focus on "SOA in a .net Connected World".   My new blog SOA Interoperability www.soainteroperability.com - (SOA Interoperability in a Connected World) will focus on connecting and interoperability between different SOA environments. These blogs are essentially based on my interest and research, and as I come across articles and research of interest I will post. If the blog draws a lot of hits, I tend to feed it more. If there is no interest I will drop them. Today this blog reaches up to a 1,000 page views per day.

The root blog will be The SOA Network www.soanetwork.net - The SOA Resource Network, which I will turn into a web site when I get time and funding. So if you are interested in sponsoring the main site or advertising on this site please let me know.
